Caleb's Story:
Caleb's story began when we took him to Urgent Care for a bad rash that had started as a diaper rash in the morning and had covered most of his body by later in the day. He was diagnosed with a viral rash and we were sent home. That evening, he spiked a high fever and started more viral symptoms including cough and congestion. By morning, his eyes were bloodshot. We knew we needed to get him more help as soon as possible so we took him the local ER. After being monitored for four hours, the decision was made that he needed to be transported to Children's Hospital to receive the care that he needed. For the next five days, he continued having the same viral symptoms and spiked a fever to almost 103. However, every swab/blood draw/etc. was negative and therefore we had no answers as to why he was feeling that way. Finally, after five days of a rash, high fever, viral symptoms, blood shot eyes, swollen lymph nodes, irritability, strawberry tongue, and now swelling in his ankles/feet the medical team was able to look further and more specifically into his symptoms. Later that day, he had an echocardiogram and a chest xray. Also, we met with cardiology, rheumatology, infectious disease, and the hospital pediatrician....and finally, our prayers were heard and we found an answer. Caleb was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease. He immediately began a 12 hour IVIG infusion to begin treatment as well as being put on medications. We were blessed that our little man responded very well to treatment and one week later we were able to bring him home <3 . Caleb continued a steroid medication at home for two weeks and was put on baby aspirin for six weeks. In addition, he had follow up appointments and testing with cardiology and rheumatology at two weeks as well as six weeks.
Current Condition:
After his six week follow up, Caleb was discharged from all of his medical teams and taken off of all medication. We are so grateful for our tough little Kawasaki warrior and for all of the amazing medical professionals that were involved with his diagnosis and treatment!
